3 Habits That Should Be Avoided When Reading

Did you know that you are not reading as fast or effectively as you can. Did you know that you were taught many errors on how to read in school? And did you know that there are 3 habits you should avoid while reading? This article will identify these 3 bad habits and how to avoid doing them.
Remember when you first learned how to read when your teacher told you, "do not use your hands while reading?" That was the first big mistake you were given in school. Have you ever watched someone speed reading on television? Speed readers always use their hands. Why? Your brain tends to slow down to look at something interesting. In fact, you often read it again because it made you feel good. This causes you to slow down your reading speed. Using your hand will help keep your eye moving continuously and improve your reading speed.
Most people read the same way they were taught in third grade. You start on the first page of the text. You look at the first paragraph, and then read the first sentence. This is the second bad habit you need to break. Here is why. Have you ever gotten to the end of a book, and found an appendix that contained useful information. Information that would have made it much easier to learn an earlier chapter in your book? When do you find this appendix? After you have completed the entire book, and do not need it any longer. What if you skimmed the text before you began to read it? You would find out that an appendix is at the end of the book, and become familiar with the material it covered. Then when you actually needed the information, you could skip to the end of the book, and use it. This would make it easier to learn a complicated subject.
The final bad habit you need to break will be covered here. Many people hear a voice in their head while reading. A voice that pronounces each word slowly as if someone was speaking inside of your head. Learning to see information in a book more like a movie, and less like a conversation will immediately increase your reading speed. Moreover, it will make it much easier to remember and recall the information later when you need it.
By using your hands, skimming before you read, and creating a movie while reading instead of hearing a text, you will be changing three bad habits that are causing you to read slower and learn less. Enjoy.
